Silent Retreat Application

Retreat Agreements

Thank you for choosing to undertake a personal silent retreat at Flourish Sanctuary.

Silence is a gift we offer one another. This agreement exists to create the conditions in which everyone can experience the depth, peace and clarity that silence makes possible.

Silence is not about following rules. It is about creating the conditions in which the mind naturally becomes quieter, the heart becomes more open, and life begins to reveal itself more clearly.

1. Noble Silence
I will observe Noble Silence for the duration of my retreat. This means refraining from:
  • Conversations
  • Gestures intended to communicate unnecessarily
  • Phone calls
  • Text messages
  • Email
  • Social media
  • Video or audio entertainment
  • Unnecessary eye contact where it may invite conversation
If an essential matter arises, I understand that I may speak with a staff member.

2. Respect for OthersI recognise that every person's retreat is unique.
I agree to:
  • Respect the silence of others.
  • Avoid interrupting another person's practice.
  • Keep noise to a minimum.
  • Respect personal space and privacy.
  • Dress modestly in shared spaces.
  • Avoid behaviour that may distract others.

3. Digital Devices
I understand that phones and digital devices often interrupt the contemplative process.
I agree to:
  • Switch my phone off or place it in airplane mode.
  • Use electronic devices only if previously agreed with Flourish Sanctuary.
  • Refrain from social media during my retreat.

4. Meditation Practice
  • I understand this is a self-directed retreat.
  • I take responsibility for my own daily practice and schedule.
  • I recognise that periods of boredom, restlessness, joy, peace, confusion or emotional release are all natural parts of retreat.

5. Health and Wellbeing
I acknowledge that silence can sometimes bring strong emotions into awareness and confirm that:
  • I am responsible for my own physical and mental wellbeing.
  • I have disclosed any significant health concerns that may affect my retreat.
  • I will seek assistance if I feel unsafe or overwhelmed.
Flourish Sanctuary provides a peaceful environment but is not a medical or mental health facility.

6. Care of the Property
I agree to:
  • Leave my accommodation clean and tidy.
  • Wash any dishes I use.
  • Treat buildings, gardens and facilities with care.
  • Conserve water and electricity where practical.
  • Report any accidental damage promptly.

7. Alcohol and Drugs
To support a clear and safe retreat environment:
  • Alcohol is not permitted.
  • Non-prescription drugs are not permitted.
  • Please advise us if you require prescribed medications that may affect your stay.

8. Wildlife and Nature
Flourish Sanctuary is shared with native wildlife. I agree to:
  • Respect animals and plants.
  • Leave no trace of my visit.
  • Stay on designated paths where appropriate.
  • Help preserve the peaceful atmosphere of the sanctuary.

9. Arrival and Departure
  • I will arrive and depart at the agreed times unless alternative arrangements have been made.

10. If I Need Help
  • If I experience significant emotional distress, illness, injury or another emergency, I understand that breaking silence to seek assistance is appropriate.
  • My wellbeing is always more important than maintaining silence.

 Our Commitment to You
In return, Flourish Sanctuary commits to:
  • Providing a peaceful environment.
  • Respecting your privacy.
  • Treating you with kindness and dignity.
  • Supporting your retreat where practical.
  • Maintaining a safe and welcoming atmosphere.
  • Honouring your sincere intention to undertake this practice.

Flourish Sanctuary exists primarily to serve the people of our community. To date, we have proudly not taken any government grants or corporate money and are totally independently funded. Everybody who works on the property is an unpaid volunteer apart from our cleaner, but they do get to live on this sacred land. Black Sheep Farm and Compassion Temple are operated by volunteers of Flourish Sanctuary. Our purpose is people, not profits. If you can make a donation to support our purpose then please click here.

We believe this world is for everyone regardless of spiritual beliefs, gender identity, sexual orientation, ethnicity or species. We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land on which we gather, the Bundjalung people, and pay our respects to their Elders past, present, and emerging. We recognise their continuing connection to land, water, and community, and we support their ongoing efforts towards self-determination and sovereignty.
